Located in Pune, India, this eco-friendly design was created by NaaV Studio to achieve a perfect harmony between nature and architecture. As part of a larger open event space, the Aina shared toilet is not merely a service structure but is conceived as an extension of its natural surroundings. The project is shaped by principles of sustainability and minimal intervention; every detail is the product of an architecture that respects nature.
The structure sits within a grove of mango trees, with a simplicity guided by natural materials. During the design process, the position of the trees determined the shape of the structure; one tree was even framed by a large window and incorporated into the center of the space. This blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, allowing the presence of nature to be felt at all times.
The character of the structure is defined by the elegant power of natural stone. The floor and sink are carved from a single piece of local granite. The rust-toned surface of the granite lends an earthy warmth to the space while creating a sculptural effect with its simple form. This stonework, crafted by artisans, is not merely a use of material but becomes a form of expression that brings the raw texture of nature into architecture.
The compressed earth used on the walls blends with the stone on the floor, creating an organic continuity. The steel and tin sheets on the roof are softened by bamboo woven mats inside; thus, light and shadow dance on the surfaces throughout the day. The dark-toned wooden doors blend naturally with the stone and earth walls.
This project by NaaV Studio proves that architecture can coexist with nature rather than compete with it. Stone, earth, and bamboo are not merely structural elements here, but an extension of the landscape. The building steps back and makes room for nature. Thus, through every surface, every texture, and every reflection of light, the purest form of architecture—naturalness—emerges.
