In this special interview with Cadu Mayresse, the founder of Mayresse Arquitetura, we discussed his innovative approach to contemporary architecture, his passion for using natural stone, and how he combines aesthetics and functionality in his designs. From the founding process to award-winning projects, this inspiring journey offers a closer look at Mayresse’s perspective on architecture and his future plans
What was the process of establishing Mayresse Arquitetura, and what were the biggest challenges you faced during this time?
The creation of Mayresse Architecture was a reflection of my passion for transforming spaces into unique experiences, integrating functionality and aesthetics in an innovative way. From the outset, the idea was to break with conventional standards, bringing a contemporary and authorial look to each project, integration with nature and the use of exposed concrete. The biggest challenges involved establishing acceptance of contemporary architecture, which was considered “too modern” for the time, and thus gaining the trust of clients in projects that prioritize not only beauty, but also technical innovation and sustainability.
How do you define contemporary architecture, and how do you ensure this concept reflects in your projects?
Contemporary architecture, for me, is a way of dialoguing with the present and the future, seeking functionality, minimalism and integration with nature. It’s about creating spaces that are aesthetically striking, but that also promote well-being and are environmentally responsible. In Mayresse’s projects, this is reflected in the careful choice of natural materials, the use of sustainable energy generation sources, the use of natural lighting and ventilation, which also promotes a strong connection between the interior and exterior of the homes.
How important is natural stone, especially marble, in your projects?
Natural stone is an essential element in our signature. Marble, in particular, strikes a balance between sophistication and timelessness, enriching environments with texture, depth and authenticity. It becomes the protagonist or the perfect complement, depending on the narrative of the project. What’s more, because it’s a natural stone, each piece is unique, making it an exclusive material for the client.
When selecting natural stone, what criteria do you focus on in terms of aesthetics and practicality?
The first criterion is uniqueness: each natural stone tells a story through its textures and veins. Aesthetically, I look for materials that dialogue with the concept of the project, whether through neutral tones that provide elegance, or bolder patterns to create visual impact. In practical terms, I take into account durability, resistance and suitability for the intended use of the space, be it purely aesthetic or functional.
How do you evaluate Turkey’s position in the natural stone industry? Have you used Turkish marble in your projects, or do you plan to in the future?
Turkey occupies a prominent position in the natural stone sector and is renowned for the quality and variety of its stones, especially marble. I haven’t yet explored Turkish marble options in projects, but it would certainly be very special to be able to design with such a unique and exotic material. I believe that Turkey’s rich heritage and technical excellence in this field make its materials an attractive choice, and I certainly intend to incorporate them in the future.
How did winning the Corporate Architecture VI Grand Prize in 2009 serve as a turning point in your career?
Winning the Grand Prize for Corporate Architecture in 2009 was a transformative milestone, as we worked with a volumetry that was rarely seen in architecture at that time. While classic lines and projects with exposed roofs were the most common, we worked with pure lines formed by volumes that organized each sector of the project.
Transposing this recognition to Mayresse Architecture opened doors to new challenges and larger-scale projects.
Do you have any advice for young architects or those planning to enter this field?
My main orientation is always to pursue authenticity in each project and innovation in processes. Each project should carry a bit of the architect’s essence, balancing innovation and respect for the context. Never underestimate the importance of good communication with the client and, above all, study constantly – materials, trends, techniques, artificial intelligence – to stay ahead in a constantly evolving market.
Could you share a few of the most special pieces from your collection made with natural stone and marble?
Our gourmet countertops have our signature architectural features, such as overhangs, organic shapes and what we call curved lines. The countertops are always made from exotic natural stone, as are the sculpted sinks in the bathrooms and toilets.
As of the new year, we will already be including the construction of swimming pools using natural stone in our projects, so that this element is also unique to each project.
Our plans for 2025 include the development of a signature line of exotic stone home accessories.
