Born from the innovative spirit of San Francisco, MIKOL is a pioneering brand that combines the centuries-old elegance of natural stone with the practicality of modern design. Revolutionizing the industry by transforming heavy and fragile marble into a lightweight and flexible form just 1 mm thick, the brand set out with the vision of “carrying a piece of the world with you.” With the determination of its founder, Mikey Wu, MIKOL brings real marble into everyday life. It is not just a design brand; it is a contemporary lifestyle philosophy that combines sustainability, craftsmanship, and technology. Today, inspired by the creative energy of San Francisco, MIKOL is redefining the boundaries of natural stone, advancing toward becoming a global brand that is both environmentally conscious and timelessly beautiful.

What was the starting point of MIKOL? Could you share with our readers the strongest motivation that led you to establish this brand?

Mikol was born from decades of experience in natural stone processing. In an industry where innovation and competition constantly evolve—from new quarries to advanced machinery—we sought a way to truly stand out. That pursuit led us to develop our signature ultra-thin stone technology, transforming heavy marble into lightweight, flexible sheets just 1mm thick. At first, the stone industry resisted—many doubted that real marble could be so thin and strong. Rather than convincing each skeptic, our founder Mikey Wu decided to demonstrate the technology through consumer products. This idea sparked the creation of the world’s first real marble iPhone case, which quickly gained global attention and became the foundation of the Mikol’s brand.

How does the spirit of San Francisco shape MIKOL’s design philosophy?

Growing up in San Francisco and Silicon Valley deeply influenced our creative mindset. The culture of innovation, simplicity, and functionality shaped Mikol’s design approach. We aim to create minimalist, user-friendly designs that showcase the natural elegance of marble. Our philosophy is simple: let nature’s artistry speak for itself while maintaining modern practicality.

How did the idea of bringing natural stone into daily life first come about?

We wanted to show the durability and resilience of our ultra-thin marble technology. Everyday items like marble phone cases, journals, and business cards became the perfect test subjects—beautiful, tactile, and functional. If a real marble iPhone case could survive daily drops and still protect the phone, it proved that natural stone could seamlessly fit into modern lifestyles.

How does your “1 mm thin stone technology” harmonize with the nature of marble?

Our innovation respects nature by using less stone and reducing material waste, promoting sustainability within the stone industry. Instead of altering marble’s essence, we reimagine its potential—allowing it to exist beyond architecture and interior design. This technology enables marble to harmonize effortlessly with modern materials and applications, bridging nature and design in new ways.

What kind of engineering solutions have you developed to overcome the fragility of marble?

Marble is naturally composed of grains and minerals that make it both strong and brittle. To reinforce thin stone, we enhanced traditional methods—using advanced fiberglass mesh and high-performance resin to absorb impact and maintain flexibility. While every material has a breaking point, our engineered 1mm marble sheets are significantly more resilient than conventional slabs, achieving a balance between strength and elegance.

The natural veining of marble makes every piece unique. How do you turn this uniqueness into an advantage in your design process?

The individuality of each marble vein is what makes every Mikol’s creation truly one-of-a-kind. When we launched the marble iPhone case, we celebrated this uniqueness—no two cases were ever the same. Today, this principle defines all our collections. We don’t allow customers to select specific veining online; instead, we embrace nature’s artistry, ensuring every product carries its own story and identity. As well as demonstrating the customer’s own preference in design.  As we all know in the stone industry, some designers may like marble with more vein and some find beauty in less vein.  It’s all in the eye of the beholder.

Which marble types do you most often focus on when it comes to color and texture selection?

Our cornerstone materials are Carrara White and Nero Marquina, timeless classics recognized worldwide. Their contrast—light and dark, soft and bold—captures the essence of natural luxury. Depending on product evolution and seasonal trends, we also introduce new or limited-edition stones to expand our color palette and texture diversity.

What challenges did you face when adapting marble into the scale of fashion accessories?

When we launched, marble aesthetics were trending—but integrating real stone into fashion was an entirely new challenge. Our focus was on making marble both wearable and functional. Although our 1mm marble can bend slightly, we perfected the process by combining it with premium Italian leather, creating elegant, flexible designs that merge durability with style.

In your opinion, what role will marble play in the fashion and design world in the coming years?

As Mikol gained recognition, more designers began experimenting with real marble in fashion as well as other industries. We welcome this growth—it expands awareness of what’s possible with thin stone technology. We believe marble will continue evolving as a symbol of sustainable luxury, merging craftsmanship, technology, and timeless beauty across fashion, architecture, and lifestyle products.

As you carry forward the vision of “a piece of the Earth with you,” what is your greatest dream for the future?

Our founder’s dream was simple yet revolutionary: to show the world that real stone can be as thin as a credit card and durable enough for daily use. Mikol was never just about selling products—it’s about changing perceptions of what natural stone can do. Our goal is to continue inspiring industries and individuals to carry a piece of the Earth with them, wherever they go.
