Liebherr and Fortescue have unveiled the T 264 battery-powered mining truck, which will accelerate the transition to zero-emission operations in the mining sector. This electric and autonomous truck is considered a major step towards the goal of reducing carbon emissions. Fortescue’s Western Australian operations will receive 360 T 264 trucks and a total of 475 electric mining machines. This is the largest equipment investment in Liebherr’s history.
The T 264 trucks are equipped with a 3.2 megawatt-hour battery and can carry 240 metric tons of payload. Thanks to the fast charging system developed by Fortescue, these trucks can be charged in just 30 minutes. This allows operations to continue without interruption. Fully autonomous and electric versions of the trucks are scheduled to be operational in the first quarter of 2025.
In terms of sustainability, the T 264 trucks are equipped with Michelin XDR Energy tires to improve energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption by 3.6%. This innovative collaboration between Liebherr and Fortescue is considered revolutionary in the mining industry for the proliferation of zero-emission technologies.
