The Turkish Culture House, established by the Nobel Prize-winning Turkish Scientist Dr. Aziz Sancar in USA, will be covered with Turkish marble with the support of Aegean Mine Exporters’ Association (EMİB). EMİB will also make Atatürk and Piri Reis sculptures in the garden of Turkish Culture House.
The world famous Turkish scientist Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar who brought the Nobel Prize to Turkey in 2015, founded the Turkish Culture House in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2008 in order to guide the Turkish people that starts a live in the USA by taking inspiration from the difficulties he experienced during his first years in America.

Koç Foundation has presented Dr. Aziz Sancar the “Scientist of the Year” award in 2007. With this award, he founded the Aziz – Gwen Sancar Foundation (AGSF). Since 2008, the current Turkish Culture House has been providing various opportunities for accommodation for Turkish students studying in the North Carolina region, as well as organizing events for strengthening Turkish-American relations and introducing Turkish culture.
In 2015, after winning the Nobel Chemistry award, he bought a new land, with his entire Nobel Prize for Chemistry Award money and with the support of Turkish friends and businessmen in Turkey and America, on the main street very close to the school campus,
The Turkish Culture House, which will be built on 9 acres of land, will have a closed area of 1100 square meters in total. Turkish Culture House’s main hall floor, wet areas, entrance and back garden of the building and exterior side will be covered with Turkish marble which will be provided by Aegean Mine Exporters Association (EMİB). EMİB will also make Atatürk and Piri Reis sculptures in the garden of Turkish Culture House.
The Architecture of Turkish Culture House was inspired by the Building of the Grand National Assembly
EMİB President Mevlüt Kaya with; Selahattin Çınar, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and Hikmet Çelikkol, the Member of the Board of Directors, made a trip to the US North Carolina state to visit Saint Sancar in his lab and to discuss the details of the Turkish Culture House Project with the architects. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of EMİB, Mevlüt Kaya stated that they see giving support to the Turkish Culture House which was inspired by the architecture of the first Turkish Grand National Assembly building and will bring together Turkish and foreign students studying in USA, as a social responsibility project. Kaya claimed that EMİB is proud and happy to take place in such a prestigious project. The Turkish Scientist, Prof. Dr. Aziz who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry and continued his scientific studies in the USA, has raised the standards of Turkish youth higher. Aziz Sancar, besides being a valuable scientist, is a great lover of Turkey. The Turkish Culture House Project is a concrete proof of this love. We would also like to thank them for giving us the opportunity to contribute to Turkish Culture House Project, which we believe will become more magnificent. Our young people who will stay in the Turkish Culture House will grow up as worthy scientists like Aziz Sancar and will serve humanity. ”
What will be inside the Culture House?
The Cultural Center was designed as a two-storey detached guest house. There will be classrooms for Turkish language lessons, activity areas for marble art and painting classes, a library in which written and visual publications about Ataturk and Turkish Culture will take place, Handcrafted Mardin Stones in part of the library, and a part of a model house of Aziz Sancar’s childhood, a kitchen where American women will be taught how to cook Turkish food, a tea room where Turkish students can spend time and offices of Turkish-American Associations. Gwen Sancar, who was declared the Honorary Consul of North Carolina by the Republic of Turkey, will also have a study room there.
Solar Energy Panels
Up to 8 or 10 students will be able to stay together with their families in the private guesthouse if they wish. In the project that will reflect the modern Turkish traces, there will be solar energy panels on the roof. With solar energy panels, the energy of the Culture House will be provided entirely from the nature. In the project, which will be constructed on a slightly inclined area, the downward flowing water will be stored in a 250 tons depot and will be used in the garden irrigation and toilets. On the backside of the building, there will be a garden for activities related to Turkish Culture and an outdoor activity area with capacity of 200 people. Since the Chapell Hill Region will receive a lot of rainfall, a special surface polishing process called “satin lac” will be applied on the marble that will be used in the exterior coatings of the building. Thanks to this new surface treatment, the exterior of the building will maintain its first day look.
There Will be Sculptures of Atatürk and Piri Reis in the Garden
Kaya stated that they will build the sculptures of Atatürk, the founder of Turkish Republic and two sculptures of the Ottoman sailor and captain Piri Reis, who draw the first world map with America and is known by the maritime book called Kitab-i Bahriye Kaya at the back garden of the Turkish Culture House. Kaya said: “We will choose the sculptors who will make these sculptures, together with Aziz and Gwen Sancar Foundation through a contest to be organized by our Aegean Maden Exporters Association. In addition, we invited the architects of the Culture House project to İzmir MARBLE International Natural Stone Fair, which will take place in Izmir at the end of March 2018. We will inform American architects about the Turkish Natural Stones during the fair visits.”
