Natural stones, with the distinctive combination of durability, warmth and beauty, inspire artisans throughout the ages.
With the invention of stone tools, people have always sought the warmth and durability of stone in granite to marble mines. “Although stone structures have become rare nowadays, these durable, versatile and old materials still play a leading role, especially in sustainable designs. If you choose natural stones, such as marble, for your floors, the chances of the selected material being over 200 million years old are very high.” says Tolga Altuğ, Materials Marketing Product and Purchasing Manager, the only handmade architecture, dimensional stone and tile manufacturer in America.
Since 1965
Materials Marketing is one of America’s oldest and leading stone manufacturers. Since 1965, the company has grown steadily, buying natural stone from the quarry to the final product from all over the world for the highest quality and most sustainable applications. The company directs its customers in the most accurate way throughout the entire process, from the selection of materials of the designer teams to the Auto CAD coatings and delivery. Materials Marketing, which was specialized in residential works, is very experienced in commercial projects, such as California Shopping Center, which is made by more than 145,000 meters of stones.
The most popular types of stones
Stating that the three most popular types of natural stones of Materials Marketing are limestone, travertine and marble, Tolga Altuğ says, “Each stone has a character with its unique history and geography, Limestone was formed millions of years ago under warm, shallow seas or lakes, mostly from sea remains and minerals that accumulate from shells, bones and corals. This makes limestone quite soft, yet powerful and versatile. Travertine, on the other hand, is a kind of limestone and consists of evaporation of mineralized water in caves. It can contain all kinds of limestone quartz, feldspar, clay minerals and small particles and minerals that change appearance and texture, such as pyrite. Marble is a limestone that is exposed to extreme heat and pressure, usually found in volcanic regions. But this makes it more durable as well as providing a unique aesthetic. The high crystal gives a special shine to marble.”
The use of stone
Giving information about the use of stones, Altuğ said, “Three types of limestone were used to build some of the most beautiful structures in history. These include the Great Sphinx, Parthenon, and the Lincoln Memorial. You can also see marble and travertine in iconic buildings such as Taj Mahal and Colosseum. A new look and aesthetics can be created by giving the material a pointed, grooved, sanded or polished form. Today, natural stone is used in all kinds of buildings such as commercial, residential and high level. Natural stone is an option for almost any project – such as window and door frames, terraces and pavements, interior and exterior wall cladding, kitchen countertops, sinks, fireplaces. All you have to do is select the material that suits your site’s requirements. Because these materials differ greatly in terms of many different technical features such as water absorption, strength, heat storage capacity or frost resistance.”
Lasts for generations
Altuğ says, “Materials Marketing, embraces the naturally occurring lines and color changes in the stone, we make each piece a unique product. Extracting stones from the quarry requires only a little energy. Since natural stone does not contain large pollutants, it can be easily disposed and recycled. And it lasts for generations. The most important feature of natural stone is its versatility, which offers numerous design options to architects and builders with its unique surface. Today, with modern blades techniques, and computer-aided design, it is possible to do everything with natural stone.”
