The second edition of the educational projects titled, “Natural Stone Sector Sustainable Education Projects, organized by İMİB in order to bring together the natural stone sector and architecture and interior design university students, took place at the “Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department” of Yaşar University on November 23, 2018.

Proper Use of Natural Stone in Projects

In the presentation, which began with the introduction of IMIB, Ahmet Bilal Uzkuç informed about natural stones and their production methods. The importance of natural stone in Turkish and world economy was explained. Then Assoc. Dr. Nimet Öztank made a presentation titled, “The Use of Natural Stone & Marble in Interior Design and Trends”. In the course of the presentations, the students took part in a workshop aiming to teach the design and application of natural stone & marble floorings and wall claddings. The students designed the floor and wall claddings of the spaces they design within the framework of their Interior Design Class projects.

The students were informed about whether the suitability of the stones they chose during designing for the space they are working on, the color and pattern alternatives of Turkish stones, and surface treatment shapes to be used according to the design themes.

In light of this information, the students visualized 3D designs using drawing programs. Assistant Dean İlker Kahraman, Instructors Zeynep Sevinç Karcı, Fulya Ballı, Dr. Aylin Gazi Gezgin and Research Assistant Selin Karagözler participated in the workshops with the participation of 70 students.

İMİB President Aydın Dinçer, stating that the design is one of the most important instruments used by companies to be superior in competitions, said: “We know very well that design is a work of accumulation. In essence, it aims to facilitate human life. While the design enables us to understand the needs of the consumer, it should benefit the consumer from another point of view. As the sectoral representatives, in the pursuit of “continuous success”, we aim to write a story, which is nourished by the deep-rooted culture of this country. Our land and climate are fertile for design. I would like to underline once again that we are moving with the intent of introducing the variety of our country’s resources and wide usage fields to the architects and promote the motto of Turkish Stones in the world in order to achieve a more sustainable economy. I wish the Natural Stone Design Competition to contribute to the design power of our country on the way of reaching 2023 targets and congratulate all our designers and precious jury members.”

Award-winning Designs

In the competition, which has been held by İMİB, in order to contribute the development of the sector since 2011, the awards were presented in 2 different categories. Industry leaders, academicians and professional designers evaluated projects presented in the competition.  As result of the evaluation of the jury, 12 projects out of 619 projects were deemed eligible for prize.  The winning design of Professional Category was entitled to receive 15,000 TL, while the second and third designs received 10.000 TL and 7,000 TL respectively. In the Students Category, the winning design was entitled to receive 10,000 TL, while the second and third designs received 5,000 TL and 2,500 TL respectively. Honorable Mentions in the Professional Category were presented to Hande Aydoğan for her design named Layer, to Ömer Yeşildal for his design named Dostone and to Ahmet Ünveren and Ecem Dilan Köse for their designs titled Basamak.

The third prize in the Professional Category was presented to Merve Canbey and Aylin Korubaşı for their design named Turn, the second prize was given to Mustafa Yılmaz for his design named Squeeze and the first prize was presented to Mehmet Çağrı Selçuk for his design named Öğüt. Honorable Mentions in the Students Category were presented to Bünyamin Atan for his work named Living Limestone, Alihan Sağlam for his work named Döngü and to Berk Şahin for his work named Mizan. The third prize in the Student’s Category was given to Deniz Yenidoğan for her work titled Hotnuts, the second prize was given to Elif Tuncay for her work titled Circle, the first prize was given to Ahmet Ergün and Sümeyye Soyer for their works titled Cofha.

The influence of Islamic art

Al Hambra Palace, that built on an area of 60 thousand square meters parallel to beach of Antalya Çolaklı; just opposite the beauty of the Mediterranean, represents the influence of Islamic art and the grandeur of the palace with its arches, columns, column heads, bases, gold gilding and 35 domes. The lobby is one of the areas of the hotel, which is mainly used with natural motives. In this section, an important detail that is frequently encountered in Islamic art, ‘girih’ draws attention. The lobby floors which is inspired by girih art and designed with light beige, gold and onyx stones, offers a rich visual feast to its guests.

14 pieces of CNC

In the project that the effect of Islamic art is tried to be reflected, the main restaurant has a more modern style. In the hotel with its own architectural language, where the era architecture is integrated with today’s modernity the main restaurant is floored with natural stone works of Perlato, Dark Beige and  Usak  White. The Alacarte restaurant is dominated by Gold Beige, Light Beige, Usak White and Travertine Noce stones, while Perlato on the bed floors and granite works on the bathrooms are striking. In Al Hambra, standing as the example of Serkaya Mining’s perfect natural stone craftsmanship, highly appreciated with its 14 CNC applications.

In the hotel which amazes with natural stone technics; Burdur Beige (Serkaya Mining) 11,000 square meters, Dark Beige (Bursa) 2,000 square meters, Onyx (Persia) 2.000 square meters, Usak White (Ceylan Marble) 1,000 square meters, Traverten Noce (Teknomar) 1.500 square meters, Perlato (Portsan) 5,000 square meters, Emperador Dark (Spain) 500 square meters, Usak White (Ceylan Marble) 700 square meters, Manyas White (Topkara Marble) 700 square meters in total, 24 thousand 400 square meters of natural stone was used.

As you step into the lobby of the hotel that admires you with marvelous natural stone applications, you get this message, giving you a hint about what you will see inside: “The glory and gleam inside will cut your breath” The interior spaces of the Jumeirah Zabeel Palace, which takes you on a journey to the glory of Palace life from centuries ago with its architecture, are covered with Medi Black, Marmara, Golden Tobaco and Tiger Post. Verde Guatamala is the only imported stone used in this project.

In the symposium which was held in partnership of Adalar Municipality and İstanbul Mineral Exporters Association, 8 sculptures worked intensively for 20 days in order to present their precious art pieces to the Island.

The Art Meets Daily Life

Participant sculptures of the symposium, which is prominent for the culture of the city, sculpted their sculptures in the open air atelier. In the meanwhile, the art lovers in the city were able to follow the formation process of art pieces. The city has gained 8 new sculptures at the end of the organization, which integrated daily life with art.

Production of natural stone with high added value

Karakaya expressed their production stage as follows; “We are cutting export quality block marble in the international standards and shipping all desired sizes from our factory to all over the world. The width size of our products is 63 cm. We have no limit in length. Our monthly production capacity is currently 8 thousand square meters with one daily shift. We can raise this figure to 15 thousand square meters with double shift.  We currently employ 17 people. In the coming period, this number will increase a little more and we will be able to go up to 22 people. This is an ST factory. Blocks cut in the ST line are then being reinforced in the oven band and gets ready for export after they are polished and packed. There are high technology units in our machine park.”

Exports for the future of Turkey

Ayşe Karakaya said: “We started production in the first quarter of 2017. The main markets for our product are the Middle Eastern and Far Eastern countries. Akstone aims to be an important brand in the international market in the following periods. Currently, light Burdur Beige is on demand in our target markets. Our selection will be expanded in this direction. Emperador is the second popular stone following light Burdur Beige. We provide that selection as well. Akstone is able to make limitless production but we are primarily working with Light Burdur Beige.” Karakaya continued his words as follows; “Except for our existing production, we also manufacture natural stone for special projects. According to our annual production and sales plan, 3.000 m2 of our 8.000 m2 total monthly production will be sold for domestic use from our depots in Antalya and the remaining 5.000 m2 will be exported. We will be participating İzmir MARBLE Fair and I believe we will be selling most of our production during the fair.

Ayşe Karakaya, who does not neglect to mention the privileges of being a woman in the natural stone sector, concluded her statement as follows: “In general, it is argued that marble workmanship is actually a male business, but I wanted to destroy this prejudice in our society as a businesswoman. I am trying to remove this prejudice through the Antalya Altinova Businessmen Association (ALTINSİAD), which is an NGO currently chaired by me and has a significant contribution to the Turkish economy through its members who are mainly the presidents and owners of leading Turkish companies.  I would like to transform the concept of “businessmen” into the concept of “business person” The positive attitudes of members of the association towards this concept also support me in the positive direction. I see that the role of women in Turkish Business life has been growing fast every day. I shared my views on this subject with the government officials at the ministry. In this context, I believe that the role of women in the natural stone sector will further increase in the coming years. I think in the business world, the role of women is determined by women.”
