Hard and cold marbles can be transformed into completely different dimensions with the touch of a master sculptor with an endless imagination. Every stone that a master sculptor touches is no longer an ordinary stone, but turns into a scream, a silk fabric and a sad look. In this issue, we introduce you to the works of Alex Seton, a veteran Australian artist who brings life to the stones. Almost every work of the artist carries great messages. Now, we leave you alone with the work of artist that reflects the problems of asylum seekers.
“Someone died trying to live a life like mine”
Alex Seton has such works made of marble that it is impossible not to look and feel moved. Especially when you look at the works that the asylum seekers tell about their problems, you are deeply grieved. The aim of the artist is to provide empathy. One of the works of the artist in which he deals with asylum seeker policies is 28 life vests carved from Wombeyan Marble. The 28 life vests in this Dark Heart-themed study symbolize the 28 life vests found on land in May 2013, which are thought to be the result of unsuccessful attempts to reach Australia. Seton says that his work provides empathy between these souls and the audience for. Seton says: “It was an act of developing empathy; this is a call to empathize with people and remember our privileges.”
Shelter
And next is the artist’s ‘Journey’ themed work called “The Shelter” … A lonely body wrapped in tarp, an asylum seeker. As you look at this art piece, you empathize with the feelings of a lonely, desperate, cold, tired and scared asylum seeker. The work carried out with Bianca Carrara Marble, which symbolizes a desperately waiting asylum seeker, wrapped in a linoleum sheet that protects her at that moment, is 110x120x170 cm.
Rowing in pursuit of hope
Another work of the artist, which describes the dangerous sea voyage of asylum seekers and the hope they pursue at the expense of their lives, is ‘Renewal and End’. The artist preferred wood and Bianco marble in his 100x18x4 cm work named ‘Paddle’. The artist used Wombeyan marble in his work representing the extinguished zodiac boat used by asylum seekers. Extinguished boat made of marble, measures 140x95x12 cm. The 54x40x30 cm upright life vests made of Bianco Marble symbolize that each of the people who endanger their lives at sea reach the shore with their own stories.
408 boats made of marble
Alex Seton’s another work of asylum seekers is the 408 boats made of Bianco Carrara Marble. The largest of the marble boats is 12x25x12 cm and the smallest one is 6 x 12 x 6 cm.
