Serpentinite: Nature’s Green Gift Serpentinite is a type of metamorphic rock containing magnesium silicate minerals. Serpentinites have greenish or brownish colors and are formed through clastic metamorphism. Serpentinite is a valuable material used in the architectural, chemical and ornamental stone industries. Serpentinites can be used to make products such as flooring stone, bathroom countertops and kitchen countertops. Serpentinite can also be used to produce catalysts and abrasives. Some stones made from serpentinite are popular with collectors. Serpentinites can be found in many parts of the world. The most abundant serpentinite deposits are in the Coast Range in California in the United States. Serpentinites are also mined in countries such as Italy, Turkey, Canada and Norway. Serpentinite is formed when basaltic rocks on the ocean floor react with hot water enriched with oxygen. During this reaction, magnesium silicate minerals metamorphose and lead to the formation of serpentine. Serpentinite can be called the green gift of nature. Thanks to both the beauty and usefulness of serpentinite, it is a rock much loved and sought after by
people.
Amphibolite: A Dark-Colored and Durable Rock
Amphibolite is a dark-colored and granular metamorphic rock type among igneous or metamorphic rocks. It is a rock type in which amphibole minerals (e.g. hornblende) and plagioclase feldspars coexist. Amphibolite rocks are usually formed as a result of metamorphism of granitic or volcanic rocks. However, the rock type may show different characteristics depending on the environmental factors in the region. Amphibolite stone has different and rich selections due to different minerals and various formation conditions. Amphibolite is used in various construction projects due to its durability. For example, it is used in a wide variety of areas such as kitchen countertops, interiors, floor coverings, ornamental and souvenir making, landscaping, road construction, fire bricks and wall coverings. As can be seen in the analysis results of the stone, it does not contain asbestos, which is a harmful substance, and is frequently used in areas where hygiene is prioritized. Although amphibolite rock deposits are limited in Turkey, ‘Armena Mining’ has become one of the leading producers of this product. The extraction of amphibolite rocks is done during mining operations. First, soil and other materials are removed from the surface. Amphibolite stone is mined using the singling method and unique selections are obtained after the counting process. Amphibolite rocks are used in various applications due to their durability and aesthetic appearance.
