Part of the 2,500-year-old stone paved road connecting ancient cities in the Beşparmak Mountains (Latmos) region of Aydın was concreted. Nature lovers reacted strongly to the practice.
After the application made by nature lovers, a decision was taken to protect the road and to correct the destruction.
The stone paved road extending from the ancient city of Herekleia to the Beşparmak Mountains (Latmos) was first discovered by archaeologist Dr. Dr. Anneliese Peschlow in the 70s.
The stone-paved roads known to have been built by Pleistarchus, the founder of the ancient city of Herakleia, connect the ancient cities of Myus, Alinda, Alabanda, Tralleis, the Menderes Valley and the Marsyas Valley.
As a result of the studies carried out by the Aydın Regional Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Assets, these roads were registered after 2018.
In recent months, due to the unauthorized intermittent concrete coating of an area on the 2,386-meter ancient road section extending from Tekeler Neighborhood of Karpuzlu to the Ancient City of Alinda, experts from the Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Assets (KVKBK) Directorate made on-site inspections upon the application of the Ecosystem Conservation and Nature Lovers Association.
After the examinations, it was decided to restore the stone pavement road, which was damaged by coating with the method to be determined by the Museum Directorate, and to take the necessary legal actions to prevent the same situation from happening again.
