Natural stone exports increased to 20 billion dollars in the last 10 years
With the Mining Law enacted in 1985, an investment guarantee was given to the sector, thus paving the way for production. In the first year of the Marble Izmir Fair, which brought the natural stone industry together in Kültürpark in 1995, the total natural stone exports were 77 million dollars; Currently, Turkey’s natural stone exports have reached 2 billion dollars with the contribution of the fair. In the last 10 years, natural stone exports have contributed approximately 20 billion dollars to the Turkish economy. The Marble Izmir Fair, which started with 47 local participants in Kültürpark and hosted 4 thousand 719 people, did not fit into its container in 2015 Thanks to Marble, Turkey has the largest and most modern fairgrounds in line with international standards. In 2015, the opening of FuarIzmir was held together with the Marble Izmir Fair. This area, which has brought an international brand value to Izmir in fair organization, has been one of the contributions of Marble Izmir to the city.

The Fair, which has reached 1,100 exhibitors from 47 exhibitors, and 77 thousand visitors from 4 thousand visitors in 25 years, contributes to closing the foreign trade deficit of the country. The countdown to March 30 has begun!
The countdown has begun for the 27th Marble Izmir Fair. Marble Izmir is excited to open at FuarIzmir from 30 March to 2 April. With the acceleration of the vaccination processes in Turkey, visitors from many parts of the world are expected to come to the Fair. All of the buyers registered in previous years within the scope of the Hosted Buyer program stated that  they will attend the Fair if the pandemic conditions allow it. The fair is getting ready to bring dynamism to the sector again by stepping up with events such as the World Stone Summit and the Different Design Competition.

Safe fair organization
FuarIzmir, which has the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) Covid-19 Safe Service Certificate dated March 2021, will host the natural stone industry this year with the area arrangement and applications in accordance with the pandemic conditions. The top 10 countries that most prefer Turkish natural stone are China, the United States, France, Israel, Iraq, India, Germany, Australia, the United Arab Emirates and Libya. Coverings Fair, which took place in Orlando last year, will be held in New Orleans in 2020. CNR Marble Tech, which was organized in collaboration with CNR Holding’s Positive Fair and Natural Stone Machinery and Technologies Producers Association (DOTEK) and supported by KOSGEB is the first and only marble machinery, technology and equipment fair of Turkey. Representatives of the Fair announced that CNR Marble Tech hosted thousands of foreign professional buyers from Iran, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Macedonia, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia, Britain and France. Most of the participant companies stated that they participated in the firt edition of the fair to give support to the organization. There are also those who say that they will not participate again. While some companies say that they made more target oriented meetings, as the fair was specific to machinery producers, some said they want to see marble producers in this fair. Since it was the first year of the fair, we came to give support. Since it was a new fair, the number of visitors was normal, although not much known. Visitors from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Pakistan, Northern Iraq, North Africa, Syria and Iran visited our booth. As we mostly target international buyers, the fair met our expectations. Good thing we did. I think that the companies that do not participate in the fair this year will participate next year. I believe the fair will be better next year.

17 people participated in the fair as Denizli group. We wanted to try it because it was organized in the metropolitan area and it was a fair of the sector. Visitors from Iran, Palestine, Libya, Arab countries visited our booth. We sold machines. We produce consumables for marble machines. The fair met our expectations in terms of the work we do, but I do not think it meets the expectations of other machinery companies. I am not happy with the number of visitors. CNR Expo needs to bring people from overseas countries. They need to bring the marble producers. It should be promoted well. We spend a lot of time and money to participate here. The exhibition company should fulfill its duty and work harder. I do not think that this fair will continue, and even if it does, I do not intend to participate again. We can not be separated from marble.

As manufacturers of marble machines, we wanted to have a fair of our own. Since we thought that we could reach the target audience more easily via such a specialized fair, we decided to participate in the Istanbul Fair. As it is the first fair, expectations may be kept low. We may have looked from the same perspective. Overall, we had good negotiations. More goal-oriented meetings were held. The visitors were mainly from the Middle East, Palestine and Arab countries. We also had visitors from Turkic Republics. The number of foreign visitors and daily interviews in the B2B area were successful. I congratulate the fair company, which I think worked well in a very short time. This was the first time we felt ourselves important. We think that in all sectoral fairs, we are always treated as if we were sub-industry. Everyone working in the sector should see this; yes, the main object is marble, but you need a machine to process it. Currently there is no alternative to this exhibition in Turkey. İzmir Fair is a large-scale sectoral fair that includes natural stone and heavy machinery. As it is a sectoral fair, those who are interested in machines come to the fair as well as those who do not. You have to answer all of them because they are guests. This situation could cause us to move away from the target. We were able to hit the point here. I also see the approach of the CNR officials positive. I hope that the officials of IZFAS will review their approach towards us and hope that they will come to us with approaches that are more positive.

We decided to participate in this fair to open abroad. Our expectation was not too high. The fair exceeded our expectations. The CNR really worked hard fort his fair. We are pleased with the number of foreign visitors, but there were very few domestic customers. I think the lack of marble and block affects the number of visitors in the domestic market. There were mostly visitors from Arab countries. The fair should continue. It will be better every year if they combine the fair with marble slabs and blocks. Because, those who come to buy marble will also buy machinery. The person who comes to buy the machine will buy block and marble. There will be more participation in the following editions..

We decided to participate in this fair to reach marble and mining companies. I cannot say that it has met our expectations since it is the first year, but I think it will be more successful in the second year. Professionals from Greece, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and Lebanon visited our booth.

The Turkish natural stone sector has participated in The Big 5 Show in Dubai, the world’s most invested city with its 375 billion USD worth of projects this year, and introduced its products and companies to get a share of the big projects. Turkey Expotim International Fair Organizations Inc., the only official representative of the Dubai Big 5 Show which was held in The Dubai World Trade Center has been organizing the national participation to the fair since 2010. Acting General Manager Çağatay Erşahin, who made explanations about the fair on behalf of Expotim, said: “220 Turkish companies, 17 of which were natural stone companies, participated in the fair. Facing the intense interest of approximately 70 thousand visitors from 134 countries, Turkish participants have signed many business agreements and partnerships to double their exports.” Most of the companies we interviewed in the fair said that they received efficiency from this year’s fair. Some companies said: “The Big 5 and Middle East Stone were more efficient when they were being held as two separate fairs. The Middle East Stone Fair was a much more special fair for the natural stone industry. It has become a complicated fair now. We think that natural stone companies are lost in this confusion.”

Çağatay Erşahin said: “220 Turkish companies participating in The BIG 5 Show Dubai Fair became literally the star of the fair. Our companies who exhibited their products in most distinguished event of the region, the BIG 5 Show managed to increase their brand values in the Middle Eastern Market.” Erşahin added that more than 100 companies have already booked their place for Dubai Big 5 2020.

Our environmental sensitivity is high

İMİB Chairman of the Board Aydin Dinçer, who stressed that the mining industry constitutes the raw material of all strategic sectors said: “Half of Turkey’s mineral exports is made of the natural stone industry. I would like to thank the organizers of the fair which brought together all the stakeholders of this important sector under one roof. There is information pollution in the press and social media related to the mining sector. We should use domestic resources to prevent imports. The entire mining sector operates at 2.9 per 1000 of the forest fields. More than half of these areas are bare and stony lands. We have highly sensitive to environment.”

MADSİAD President Erol Efendioğlu said: “1600 truck full of 2,200 block marble were exhibited at the 5th Bursa International Block Marble Fair this year. Our Fair makes positive contribution to the promotion of Turkish marble. Italy is the biggest brand value in the world. Italy’s marble income is $ 2 billion. BTSO President İbrahim Burkay said that Bursa International Block Marble Fair has made a significant contribution to the foreign trade volume of the sector. He claimed that more than 80 thousand business professionals from nearly 45 countries visited the fair over the last 4 years, President Burkay, noted that they established the Precious Mineral and Marble Council in BTSO in order to develop the culture of acting together in the sector.

553 companies from 12 countries participated in the 42nd Building Fair – Turkeybuild Istanbul that was organized by YEM Fair Organization Company, which is part of ITE Turkey at Tüyap Congress and Exhibition Center on 18-22 June 2019. Last year, the Yapı – Turkeybuild Istanbul had hosted over 1,000 exhibitors and 85,923 visitors from 17 countries.

In America, it seems that; Porcelain products are traveling around the continent! In fact, every year the situation becomes more clear. Coverings has became the mirror of this situation! Porcelain, following the trends of marble and other natural stones, have been increasing its own market share every other year, This causes a gradual fall in the share of marble. When we look at the statistics, we see that our market share in America is stable. In other words, there is a very small amount of increase, which is caused by the high tax applied to China. Especially when we look at the final figures, we see that the decline rates in China overlaps the growth rate in Turkey especially in quartz production.

Awesome marketing strategies by porcelain manufacturers

We have to admit that, porcelain manufacturers do great things in terms of marketing strategies, competitiveness and quality standards of the products they are marketing. In spite of this, the natural stone sector is doing almost nothing in terms of marketing The summary of the situation is as follows: Porcelain in America, stole the hearts of the end consumer in all aspects. There is no other explanation for the fact that the porcelain products are full of visitors! Porcelain has became the common focal point for architects, interior designers, designer, landscapers, in short, for everyone who has something to do with the building cladding.

Great criticism for national participation stands

The common problem for all the companies exhibited under the National Participation Organization in Coverings, was the inappropriate design of the stands. İMİB officials stated that they would discuss these unsatisfying booth installation situations with the installer company. The most obvious problem in stand installations was the lighting. The lighting fixtures placed behind the exhibited natural stones and this caused the stone to remain in the dark. This was even more obvious during photo shootings.  

We take criticisms into consideration…

We will evaluate all the criticisms made by our participants and take our notes. After the fair we will consider this issue with precision. We will discuss all these complaints with the company that designs and installs stands. We will find a solution by considering the rights of our companies in the sector.

The stands were a complete disgrace

Hasan Serter / Basaranlar Marble – Denizli

Here I would like to tell you about the fair and the connections we made. However, the situation we encountered, irritated us so much that I want to talk about this issue. You can see from the photo that there are giant pillars in the front part of the booth. How can a designer not manage to calculate the final effect of these pillars on any booth design? In addition, of course the main problem was lighting. Our business is marble and we need to show the polish quality and exact colour of our stone. However, with these designs, it is impossible to achieve this. The lighting tools remain behind the marble and the surfaces of the marbles remain in the dark. IMİB Board of Directors should make a big penalty for this company and they should never make business with them again!

İMİB should call the installer company to account for these Stands!

We participate in fairs in many countries of the world, but the most expensive fair participation for us is always the Coverings Show. Nevertheless, this time we had to exhibit our stones via badly designed stands, although we came here to increase our exports and promote our new products. Even, some of our marbles were broken before the exhibition. We want İMİB to call this company to account. Although it is not an event that meets our expectations, we at least want to make sure that someone will protect our rights. If you ask me about the fair, I can’t even make a comment since I was busy getting angry fort he stand construction.

It is obvious that the company that makes the stands is inexperienced!

We did not come here with great expectations, but we didn’t think that the stands could be this bad. The installer company was obviously very novice. During the installation phase, the products of many companies were damaged. The lighting was literally a fiasco. In my opinion, I would like to see a big banner or flag with “Türkiye” script on it in the Turkish National Participation Hall. Other countries do it proudly. I wonder if we had any reason to not to do it. Somehow, we do not see our flags in the recent fair participations any more.

I would like to make positive comments, but its not possible!

Actually, I would like to make positive comments about this fair participation but it is not possible. We have been badly affected by the situations such as the inappropriate construction of stands and the dominance of porcelain at Coverings. Unfortunately, the stone market is gradually shrinking. What is more saddening is the unconcerned attitudes of the marble sector against this trend. The marble sector is not doing anything to maintain or increase their market shares while the porcelain producers are working very hard.
